Software engineering jobs in Bengaluru

What software engineers in Bengaluru work on, the skills employers ask for, how interviews run and how to stand out.

Software engineering is the largest group of tech jobs in Bengaluru. The city hosts engineering centres of global product companies, Indian unicorns and thousands of startups, so the same title can mean very different work: building payment APIs for a fintech, maintaining a search backend for an e-commerce company, or owning a slice of a global SaaS product from an India office.

Most openings are backend or full-stack roles. Frontend-only roles exist but are fewer, and mobile has its own guide. Titles step up from Software Engineer (SDE 1) to Senior, Staff and Principal; at each step the work shifts from finishing well-defined tasks to deciding what should be built and making other engineers more effective.

What the work involves

  • Design, build and ship features end to end, from the database schema to the API and often the UI.
  • Write tests, review teammates' code and keep the codebase healthy enough to change quickly.
  • Debug production issues, read logs and metrics, and fix the root cause rather than the symptom.
  • Break large requirements into a plan, estimate it and agree trade-offs with product managers.
  • At senior levels, own the design of a service or system and mentor newer engineers.

How interviews usually run

Expect an online coding assessment or a screening call, then two or three rounds of data structures and algorithms problems solved live. From about three years of experience, product companies add a system design round where you design something like a URL shortener, a feed or a rate limiter, and many add a low-level design round on classes and interfaces.

A hiring-manager round looks at past projects: what you built, why you made the choices you did and what went wrong. Service companies and some startups replace the algorithm rounds with a practical take-home task or a pair-programming session.

How to stand out

  • Show measurable impact on your CV: latency cut, cost saved, incidents reduced, features shipped.
  • Practise explaining your reasoning out loud while coding; interviewers grade the process, not just the answer.
  • Know one language deeply, including its concurrency model and standard library.
  • For senior roles, prepare two or three stories about designs you owned and what you would change now.

  • Brightspark collects jobs from two kinds of source, and labels each job with which: the careers sites of employers we have chosen to collect from, and open job boards, where any company can post. Choosing which careers sites to collect from is the only selection we make: we do not check individual listings or employers. Check every posting on the company’s own careers site before you apply.
  • Be aware of job scams. A genuine employer will never ask you to pay a fee for an application, interview, training, equipment or an offer letter, and will not ask for bank details, OTPs or ID documents before a formal offer.
